I'm back from London. I had a great time with Tiki Chris, Plep, and Will Kane (pictured above w/Yours Truly). Trailer Happiness was a fine little drinking establishment with just the right balance of retro decor, decent food, and top-notch cocktails. I especially enjoyed their version of the Don the Beachcomber Mai Tai, which employs absinthe bitters to good effect. Also, our bill at the end of the evening was refreshingly lighter than it was when we visited Mahiki last year.

Will told us the secret of how he lays his hands on all of those incredible images he posts (no, I'm not going to tell you, it's sekrit), and Plep revealed that he may soon be temporarily relocating to New York City. Tiki Chris regaled us with fascinating stories about the articles he's writing for the Londonist and Tiki Magazine, so be sure to ask for them at all your finer printmongerers.

As for the rest of my trip, it was uneventful. I spent most evenings hanging out with my students and cow-orkers sampling Reading's finest ales and eating pub grub. I hope to never see another plate of eggs, bacon, chips, and beans as long as I live (thanks, Ralf).

For those of you following Missus BH's health travails, she appears to have recovered a bit more of her hearing since I last posted. We will also be traveling to Minneapolis in the near future, where she will undergo a few sessions of hyperbaric oxygen therapy which has been shown to have a beneficial affect on her condition.

Finally, today is Son of Mr. Bali Hai's 18th birthday. He is now a man. Later this afternoon, we will subject him to painful initiation rites à la A Man Called Horse, then afterwards, cake and ice cream.

Date With Miss Wong

Sorry for the minimal amount of posting activity lately, but work and health issues have been affecting me for the past couple of weeks.

Mrs. BH and I both came down with a very nasty middle-ear infection last month that gave me a bad case of vertigo and caused her to suffer severe hearing loss in one ear. I'm feeling better, but unfortunately, her prognosis is not so good, and it now appears that she will probably not fully recover her hearing due to permanent nerve damage. It's a bummer for her, especially since she lost most of her sense of smell a few years back due to a bad concussion. She jokes that if she loses any more senses, I'll have to start calling her Helen Keller. Obviously, her sense of humor is still intact.

In other news, I'm leaving for London tomorrow for a few days. I plan to meet up with the usual blogging suspects: Plep, The Cartoonist, Tiki Chris and Will Kane at Trailer Happiness in Notting Hill, where I'll be able to take a peek at their gigantic print of Tretchikoff's Green Lady, and have a couple of tasty drinks.

See you in the funny papers.
