Mahalo to Tiki Chris for reminding me that today is the 60th anniversary of the start of Thor Heyerdahl's epic voyage from Peru to Polynesia on a balsawood raft, named the Kon-Tiki. His theories regarding the East-to-West migration of South Americans to the South Pacific may have been disproven by modern DNA analysis, but the best-selling book and Oscar-winning documentary of Heyerdahl's journey was largely responsible for launching the tiki craze of the 50s and 60s, along with a whole host of knock-off products like the board game pictured above.

Tiki Lovers Repent!

tiki_tract.jpg

In an attempt to save us all from burning eternally in a flaming volcano bowl of Heckfire, Humuhumu is thoughtfully sharing this VERY IMPORTANT Jack Chick-style tract on the evils of Tiki culture that she received from my friend, tongodeon, at Forbidden Island's 1-year anniversary party last Sunday night.

Repent, ye sinners, lest the Lord shatter your tiki mugs into potsherds with a rod of iron and cast your demon rum into the Abyss!

Bally Hula!

Ballyhoo.jpg

I went digging through the magazine racks at our local antique mall yesterday, and emerged with a 1935 issue of Ballyhoo, a humor magazine published by Dell between the years of 1931 and 1939. This particular issue features a South Seas theme, which should be abundantly obvious from the glorious hula girl on the cover (is that Bob Hope strumming the uke and leering from underneath his straw boater?). The contents are a mixture of Playboy-style vintage adult cartoons and Mad Magazine-ish lampoons. I'm sure this was pretty sophisticated and edgy stuff back in the Thirties, but today it seems hopelessly quaint, not to mention un-PC in the extreme. I've scanned 20 of the magazine's 34 pages and created a new gallery for them. Enjoy, and Happy Easter!
