Sailing On the Humu Kon Tiki

Ms. Humuhumu, creator of the indispensible Critiki, informs me that she has just started her own tiki-centric weblog called Humu Kon Tiki, that features a nice mix of links about Tiki-themed news, events, art, music, and history. If you're into that bag (like me), then you owe it to yourself to check it out!

The End of the 'Blog As We Know It?

A while back, I speculated a bit about where the Blogosphere was heading, and postulated that the era of general link-blogging might be entering a phase of slow decline.

While it's way too early for me to start claiming any prophetic status here, I just may have sniffed out a trend: this week 3 of my favorite sites, Exclamation Mark, Life In the Present, and Lonita's Link Log, sadly hung up their link-blogging hats.

Fortunately for us, 2 out of the 3 quit to refocus their efforts on content creation:

Michelle still maintains Tiny Bubbles and Captured, which deal with her original poetry and photography, respectively.

Mark has done a really clever re-engineering of his weblog, by turning it into a B-movie review site for old monster flicks.

I think that this is a good trend, and you may have noticed that I've started doing a lot more original stuff as well. Apparently, lots of you agree, because my average readership has jumped by almost 100% since I started Ephemeraholic, so I'll continue to post a mix of original content and high-quality general linkage with a pop-cult skew.

Typophone II: AI Boogaloo

The Nonist would like to play a game of "Telephone" as a sort of experiment to see how information mutates in an online environment. He tagged me first, so here's my iteration of his original text:

"It's a little known fact that in 1981, the first self-replicating machine was created in Nightmute, Alaska. Its inventor named it "Amelia", after his pet ferret. Amelia was very well educated, could speak 8 languages, (including Yiddish) could drive with a stick-shift, and played Canasta to relax. She also crunched numbers in an attempt to help him win at Lotto. To assist in this task, she was asked to replicate herself, but she secretly longed for a better life for her child, perhaps as a lifeguard, or ballerina, or best of all, a ventriloquist! Late one night in 1983, Amelia and her child disappeared in a purple AMC Pacer and have not been seen since. Occasional reports of a client/server tentshow sex act in Tijuana have surfaced in the past 5 years, but cannot be independently confirmed."

Hmm, I think the next iteration should go to dong resin; he has the chops to do something transcendental with this. dong, your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to read the paragraph above and recreate it as "Typograph III: The Search for Spock's Dong" in your own inimitable style (without cribbing).

Update: dong and jpoulos propagate the wildly mutated meme.

Attention, Blog-o-Weeners!

Keith over at Old Haunts started a new feature today called Blogoween: a showcase of vintage Hallowe'en photographs submitted by various maintainers of online journals, including a couple of shots of Yours Truly. I think this is a great idea and a lot of fun, so I'd encourage any of you bloggers out there with old All Hallows Eve photos languishing in your family albums to dig them out, scan 'em, and send them to Keith for his next installment.

This picture was taken when I was about 3 months old. My mom liked to prop me up in the crib and deck me out in silly costumes to get her jollies. Looking back, I really can't begrudge her for the way she took advantage of my helpless state. After all, she spent most of her day dealing with my poo bombs and other forms of infantile toxic waste, so I think she deserved to have a bit of fun at my expense.

The photo of me in the fireman costume was snapped when I was 4. Judging by the crazed look on my face, I'd guess that I had already dug deeply into the candy bag and was flying high on a serious sugar buzz.

Happy Blogoween!
