The Grog Log Turns Ten

moses.jpg Happy 10th Anniversary to Beachbum Berry's Grog Log, the first book of tropical-cocktail mixology I ever bought, and still one of the best. I'll be looking forward to picking up a copy of the revised edition (if the Bum ever gets off his bum long enough to write it).

Seriously? I think I've only had my copy for about 2-3 years! Worse yet, I've probably only made about a third of the recipes.

Nonetheless, it's a fantastic book. The Bum's efforts can't be overstated. It's not an exagerration to say that he's singlehandedly saved authentic exotic drink recipes from extinction.

Bottoms up!

I got my copy in 2000, Doc, and I've only made about 25% of the recipes in it, mostly due to a lack of the correct ingredients.

i bought mine directly through the publisher around 1998 or 99. i think i might have known about it thru james teitelbaum's site... the page directly opposite the mai tai recipe is pretty crusty and soaked in lime juice at this stage...

Yup, my Mai Tai page is crustier than a copy of Hustler hidden under the mattress in a teenage boy's room...:-D

Like I said, I seriously can't believe this book is 10 years old already... there's so many recipes I haven't tried yet!

And like you, many of the ones I haven't made are because of that *one* elusive ingredient I can't seem to find...

But I guess tracking down the obscure components is half the fun. ;-)

Making some of those ingredients myself has been a lot of fun too.

I've definitely been distracted by Sippin' Safari lately. I think it's time to go back to the Grog Log and revisit some of the recipes I flubbed due to lack of proper ingredients, and try out a few new ones.

Wow, it's been a while! I had no idea ....

I have one of the original made-in-a-kinko's Grog Logs; I posted about it on Tiki Central a year or two ago:

I remember that post, Hanford. I think I commented in it. I loved the punkish 'zine look of the original GLog.
