When Bendix Met Tootsie

The very fine Golden Age Comic Book Stories weblog has been on a serious William Bendix weekend bender that's showcasing lots of great movie posters and magazine ads, including this loaded-with-subtext advertisement for Tootsie Rolls from Nellie Comics, starring a purse-carrying beefcake superhero named "Captain Tootsie" who takes a group of obnoxious kids to the movies so they can cheer a scene from the William Bendix film, Johnny Holiday, that proudly features a box of the turd-like, cavity-pulling candies being given to a hospitalized mother. I've never seen this film, but I'm betting that Mom dies soon after from a blocked colon.

You're back - great! Many thanks, as usual, for the plug. Your "private" Expo story below is rather frightening, especially since I have a similar story to tell. But that's reserved for the next time we meet. :-)

You'll be able to share your story with me soon, Ralf. I've already made my plane reservations. E-mail to follow shortly with further details.

Really? Fab!

William Bendix is the man, for Old Hollywood character actor power. Great as a brutal galoot, OR a light-hearted wiseguy, OR a down-trodden regular Joe. Two picks: "The Hairy Ape" - a starring role, where he gets to go over the top over and over again as a lunk-headed ship's stoker who develops an obsessive fascination with a spoiled rich dame (catch the code-skirting metaphor in the last act). "Greenwich Village" - a rare musical-comedy role as a scheming, yet good-hearted show biz hustler. See Bendix do a song and dance number in a toga! Amazing.

Don't forget Life of Riley.

It's been ages since I've seen "Greenwich Village". Toga! Toga! Toga!

funny, the french favorite singer is named Johnny Hallyday.
