He did capture the fifties zeitgeist.

I agree, Jim. He was exotic and mysterious, yet non-threatening enough for Eisenhower-era housewives.

I also see (from links) that he died in Petaluma that Bay Area town where I spent many hours watching all kinds of movies in the Plaza Theater way back in the '70s and '80s. Ah, video killed the art house cinema.

And he was born someplace equally non-mysterious and un-exotic...St. Louis.
