I agree, Jim. He was exotic and mysterious, yet non-threatening enough for Eisenhower-era housewives.

I also see (from links) that he died in Petaluma that Bay Area town where I spent many hours watching all kinds of movies in the Plaza Theater way back in the '70s and '80s. Ah, video killed the art house cinema.
