Drinkin' With Satan's Little Helper
I managed to make up for an indescribably crummy week in Boulder with a fun trip to Colorado Springs and Denver today.
Whilst antiquing in the Springs, I scored no less than five...count 'em...FIVE...gorgeous tiki mugs. I found 2 from Trader Vic's: a coffee grog mug, and this speckled fog-cutter mug, both cost $8. I also found a classic 3-faced bucket mug, a Paul Marshall designed wooden tiki mug from the Phillipines, and the really odd Shriner's-head mug there on the left.
All that mug-hunting left me with a powerful thirst, so I headed back up to Denver for a cocktail or 3 at Tiki Boyd's. Now, I'd heard mixed reviews of TB's, so I entered with some trepidation, but let me tell you, this place is the real deal: great ambience, decor, drinks, and tunes. And as if that wasn't cool enough, Boyd Rice, his bad neo-nazistic, satanically-majestic, tiki-lovin' self was there. He and I spent a couple of fun hours sucking down umbrella drinks and chatting about punk, lounge, the Holy Grail, and other esoteric topics.
Now I'm back in Boulder. Merde.
Update: I bought a cheap digital camera today and snapped some low-quality photos of my mug score.

That Coffee Grog Mug is possibly the greatest thing I've seen.

I think you'd change your mind if I could find a picture of a severed-head mug from Ren Clark's Polynesian Village; one just sold recently on eBay for $1300!

If you're still stuck in Boulder, hit the Boulder Savers thrift store on S. Broadway. I found a couple of vintage, rayon hawaiian shirts, a dragon-lady dress, and a slew of 40's ties there a few years back... good thrifting. Same can be said about the Fort Collins Savers (on College).
Boulder is very much a sterilized Disneyland, but it is surrounded by funky cow-towns that are worth poking around (Longmont, Berthoud, Greely).

boulder's not as bad as all that... check out savers like old man fury said, and also the salvation army on 33rd and arapahoe... also, wander around campus some, you might find some interesting people who could tell you more, especially in the music building...

Glad to hear you enjoyed Tiki Boyd's -- did you hear the news that the exact same site was a tiki bar many years ago, designed by Eli Hedley, no less? ZuluMagoo did the homework on that, the creators of this new incarnation had no idea. I'm looking forward to checking it out myself some day.
Thanks for the Ooga-Mooga linkage!

omf and aesop: thanks for the Boulder Saver and Salvation Army tips, I'll be sure to check them out before I leave.
Humu: yes, Boyd showed me some of the old ads for the original Tiki Lounge. He wants to restore as much of it as possible. They've already exposed the original glass bricks on the bar, and are working on the waterfall.
I'll be trying to get some of my own mug collection onto Ooga Mooga in the next couple of weeks.

Meh. I've spent plenty of time in Boulder in the past 5 or 6 years; it's overrated, and the locals are so full of themselves they could just pop. Pearl St. is a big tourist trap, and it's full of aggressive panhandlers. The stores here are way overpriced, and so are the restaurants. The music scene in Boulder is pretty much dead too.
