Visite du Soleil a Satan

A History of Visual Media overwhelms the visitor with an absolutely fascinating omnibus collection that highlights imagery from pre-cinema, photography, and early film. There are so many stand-out collections at this site that singling out favorites is like trying to choose between sex, foie gras, and chocolate-chip cookie dough ice cream, but these Phantasmagoria slides, Women in Cabaret photographs, and this set of wonderful stereo photographs of devilishly morbid tableaux called Diableries really stand out.
Many, many thanks to Tacky Times

This must have been an amazing period, when suddenly a sorts of new images were available - apart from 'simple' illustrations.
Brains must have exploded!

I have a friend who has a book of the Diableries. Freaking amazing! He wanted to sell it on ebay, and I told him no way.
We were going to scan the book and post it on the internet, but could not figure out how to do it without damaging the book itself.
Thanks for making this post. I know he was having problems finding information.

Oh man, I'd love to see that book! I'm assuming that it's very old, and you're afraid of breaking the spine by putting it on the scanner?
Some other macabre dioramas that you might find interesting are the Plague Waxes, by Gaetano Giulio Zumbo.

Yeah, the book is very old, and we were worried about the spine. He left it with me for months and asked if I could figure out a way to scan the images wwithout destroying the book. I have no idea how it could be done, and eventually just gave it back to him.
