Goaded Into Action

The aptly named Jim Goad was the editor of an unbelievably inflammatory 'zine called Answer Me (PDF). I became aware of this antagonistic agitprop essayist a few years ago when I read excerpts of his infamous "Rape" issue in the equally infamous Loompanics Unlimited catalog.

After railing against feminists for denying that women can be perpetrators of domestic violence as well as victims, he ironically wound up doing hard time for breaking his girlfriend's face. His more-or-less chronological accounts of the episode make for extremely difficult, but darkly humorous reading. He continues to write, and has published several books including a treatise on po' white trash, The Redneck Manifesto, which is rapidly becoming something of an underground classic.

On one hand, I admire anyone who baits smug demogogues, stewing them in their own self-righteous juices. On the other hand, with the sole exception of his writing, I consider this guy pretty much a total failure as a human being which is no doubt what people used to say about scumbags like William Burroughs.

Thanks, and a tip o' the hat to jonmc over at Cockeyed Absurdist for the link to Goad's weblog.
